Ronaldo made his Juventus Champions League debut last night against Valencia but, in a dramatic turn of events, ended the night watching on in the dressing room.
The 33-year-old received his marching orders following a collision with Jeison Murillo, who went down after an altercation in the box.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence failed to stop Juventus from easing to a 2-0 win courtesy of goals from Bosnia international Mirelam Pjanic.
He could, however, miss an emotional return to former club Manchester United if UEFA choose to hand him a three-game ban.
Berbatov thinks the decision to send Ronaldo off was the wrong one.
And he thinks his old team-mate knew that at the time.
“I couldn’t believe the red card that Cristiano Ronaldo was given against Valencia,” he told Betfair.
“It was a ridiculous decision. You could see he was thinking ‘what the f**k are you doing ref?’ in his reaction as he went off.
“Some people might think crying is an overreaction but sometimes when you are lost in the moment, your passion takes over.
“It was his first game for his new team in the Champions League and he will be have been desperate to perform.”
While Ronaldo endured a torrid night, Lionel Messi took the Champions League by storm again.
The Barcelona forward bagged a hat-trick as they put PSV Eindhoven to the sword on Tuesday.
And Berbatov has paid tribute to the Argentine.
“Meanwhile, just another hat-trick for Lionel Messi,” he added.
“These two [Messi and Ronaldo] are like Ali v Frazier – they keep pushing each other to greater heights, driving each other on.
“It’s great to watch. Let’s hope they continue!”
